This one tends to bring up whatever you've been keeping intact through effort. Not secrets exactly. More like... arrangements: the version of a situation, a relationship, or yourself that only holds together because nobody has looked at it straight on. Sit with the question for a minute and notice what you brace for before anyone else is even in the room.
We often ask: Why do I hide who I really am? Why does being truly seen feel unsafe? What am I afraid people would find if they looked closely? Why do I feel exposed the moment someone actually pays attention?
Some things you've built only work from a distance. A story about why you left, a version of the argument where you come out reasonable, a self that's mostly made of what you do rather than what happens when you stop doing it. None of that is a lie. It's scaffolding... and scaffolding was never meant to be looked at directly.
Other things need the looking away to keep existing at all. The resentment you're not examining. The habit you've explained so many different ways so you never have to explain it the same way twice. Attention doesn't destroy these so much as it stops feeding them.
There's a specific flinch when someone sees past the arrangement, not from malice, just accuracy. Nothing gets caught out exactly. The story just stops being the only account for a second, and something else gets to be true alongside it.
Before any of this reaches thought, something in the body already knows what it wants looked at and what it wants left alone: the straightened spine when you're noticed, the held breath before an honest answer. That's not nervous energy to be avoided... that's information.
I still catch myself performing, adjusting something nobody asked me to adjust. I know this because I've watched myself do it mid-sentence and kept going anyway. I've been doing it now as I write this. It keeps happening, but it's impact dims and slowly dissolves.
I wrote about the cost of that scaffolding in What does your armour cost your soul?, and about the flinch itself in What are you pretending not to know?.
If this one turned something up and you feel like sharing it, I'd like to hear it. Private, under your name, or anonymous, whichever feels right to you.
