A hooded billow of white cloud pours down the face of a dark, flat-topped mountain under a deep blue sky.

what isn't true anymore?

Most of what we believe about ourselves was true once. Ask what isn't true anymore, and notice how long it takes to find something, and how much of it has been quietly holding up the rest.

What did I decide about myself years ago that I've never checked? Which of my rules was written for a situation I'm no longer in? Why do I still say it that way? What would I stop saying if nobody had heard me say it before?

I know a version of me who is long gone, and I've still been introducing myself as him. Nobody told me to stop. When did I last look at who is actually standing here?

Maybe it's a role, a promise, a story about what I'm like. Maybe it's a feeling that came with a person who has left. Is it still true, or is it just familiar? And how would I tell the difference?

A mountain can look the same for years and be a different mountain every hour, the weather moving across it. What in me is the rock, and what is only the cloud that's been sitting there a long time?

The body keeps some of the old truths longer than the mind does. A flinch at a kind of tone, a tension that arrives before the thought. Where do I still brace for something that has already passed?

There's also what has changed without being announced. A thing I wanted, a fear that wore thin, a loyalty I quietly put down. What would I admit if I stopped waiting for permission to update it?

And what if letting one thing go isn't a loss at all, only a clearing in the view?

I wrote about the certainty we build around what we think we know in The mirage of knowing, and about letting a chapter end without calling it a failure in It's ok to move on.

If this one turned something up and you feel like sharing it, I'd like to hear it. Private, under your name, or anonymous, whichever feels right to you.
