This one tends to catch you mid-sentence, right before you reveal the truest version of what you mean. Not only the big withholdings, it's usually the small ones that go unnoticed... the sentence you didn't finish, the ask you softened, the opinion you let die in your throat because their reaction was already starting. Notice where in your body that pause lives before you answer in words.
Why do I stop myself right before something matters? Why does going all in feel more risky than limiting myself? What am I protecting by staying smaller than I actually am? Why do I already know what I want to say and say something else instead?
There's a version of you that's easier to manage: reasonable, measured, the one who waits for the right moment. Useful, most days, though usefulness and honesty are never quite the same thing, and somewhere along the way the two got confused.
Some restraint isn't caution at all. It's a debt quietly compounding: the things you didn't say sitting somewhere, still waiting to be said, whether you ever get back to them or not.
There's a particular kind of tired that comes from managing yourself instead of just being yourself, like running multiple conversations at once: the one out loud, the one editing it in real time... and the one judging both.
The body signals it first. A sharply-held breath before you speak... a sentence that starts bold in your chest and becomes a whisper somewhere around the throat. A checkpoint you built and forgot you were still running.
I catch myself rehearsing an opinion down to something safer, here and there, watching it shrink to what's manageable right now. You don't become a saint, you become immune to the poison.
I wrote about the cost of that particular kind of waiting in Whose approval are you waiting for?, and about what gets dimmed to keep a room comfortable in What are you pretending not to know?.
If this one brought something up and your gut instinct is to share it, even with just one person, don't save it. Do it. If you'd like me to read it, you're welcome to send it my way. Private, under your name, or anonymous, whichever feels right to you.
