Highlighter: Terms of Use
The Highlighter is a small free tool. These terms are short on purpose.
By using the Highlighter, you accept these terms. That includes using it on this site, installing the bookmarklet, dragging it to your toolbar, or running it on any other page.
1. What you can do with it
Use it freely, for reading, studying, research, review work, and your own projects, personal or paid. You do not need permission and you do not owe me anything.
2. What you cannot do with the code
Do not take the code, put your name on it, and present it as your own, whether you are selling it or giving it away. If you want to build on it, build on it openly and say where it came from. If you want to ship it inside something commercial, contact me first and we will work something out.
3. What you highlight, and what you do with it
Your highlights are yours. What you highlight usually is not.
The Highlighter copies text so you can keep and export it. That does not give you any right to that text. Highlight what you like for your own reading and notes, and before you republish or circulate an excerpt, make sure you are allowed to: quote fairly, credit the source, and respect the terms of the site you took it from.
Do not use the tool to lift somebody's work wholesale, and do not use it to collect or spread material you should not have.
Use it on pages you are allowed to be on, and leave other people's sites as you found them.
4. Be decent
The tool is built for careful reading. Use it in that spirit: for your own understanding, for honest review, for work you would be glad to put your name to.
5. Where your highlights live
Your highlights stay in your own browser. They are not sent to me, and I cannot see them. That also means I cannot recover them: if you clear your browser data, change device, or use a different browser, they are gone. Anything you want to keep, export it.
6. No promises, and no liability
The Highlighter is offered as is, with no warranty of any kind. It may change, break, or stop being available. It may not work on every page.
Use your own judgement about where you run it and what you keep. I am not responsible for anything that follows from your use of it: lost highlights, lost work, how it behaves on someone else's site, or how you use what you export. If your use of the tool causes a problem for someone else, that is between you and them, and it is yours to answer for, not mine.
Nothing here takes away any rights you have that cannot be signed away under the law where you live.
7. Changes
If these terms change, the updated version goes here, and using the tool after that means you accept the update.
